What do you do?

I am the founder and executive director of The Traveling Library. I carry out the everyday tasks of running the nonprofit from the inside and the outside!

When and how did you start?

The idea of The Traveling Library started a long time ago. I never knew that I wanted to do a non-profit. I just knew that I wanted to share my passion for books and love of reading to a bunch of people! It wasn't until I started college and became an education major that I realized not everyone had the same access to books as I did. That's when I took my idea and made it into a non-profit. Our official start day was April 1,2021!

Who have been your biggest supporters?

My parents, past peers, and people that I never have even met in person have been my biggest supporters!

What has been your inspiration while embarking on this journey?

My biggest inspiration for a lot of this has to be Dolly Parton. Dolly also has her own literacy non-profit and encourages a love of reading as well! I think that someone so famous and well known also recognizes they need for literacy programs!

What has been your favorite part?

My favorite part of this journey has actually been meeting and working with the volunteers to get the "behind the scenes" stuff as perfect as we can! I was very nervous starting The Traveling Library and thought that I would be doing a lot of this on my own. My board and volunteers have brought so many unique ideas to the table and I can tell that they really want this organization to succeed!

What has been the most challenging part?

The most challenging part of running this organization has to be a lack of funds. We're still a baby organization so we don't have a lot to go off on. Luckily we have met a lot of people that have donated their time and services to help us for the time being! I would also have to say a personal challenge for me is actually going out and talking to different people and letting them know about the organization. Its getting easier but still gets nerve wrecking every time!

Have you ever wanted to give up?

Yes lol. When you run any business you have to think of the pros and cons. The catch is to not let the cons over rule the positives, but when you get a string of stressful situations oftentimes it just feels easier to give up.

What keeps you motivated to continue?

The volunteers and The Traveling Library's purpose gives me motivation, I truly think that one book can change everything.

Has anything surprised you?

Yes! The amount of people that want to help just out of kindness!

What are your dreams?

My dream is to have a more accepting society. I think we are close but not quite there yet. I believe that by handing out just one book that we can work towards this goal and have them possibly change the way they think!
